Smart lifting point Boulder Clearance Tool.
One of Vroegh-edc’s first assignments (2019) was the preparation of operational procedures for a Boulder Clearance Tool (BCT) for a offshore contractor. The BCT is used to remove large boulders and other obstacles from the seabed, creating a corridor where, for example, power cables for wind farms can be laid.

The BCT is deployed from a large Ocean Towage Tug and was previously launched overboard using tugger winches and the stern roller. For optimization and operational efficiency, the BCT is now being launched and recovered using an A-frame so the vessel can also be deployed with a subsea plough directly after the operations in order to bury power cables. To achieve this, various modifications were made to the BCT.
EPC Contract
To achieve this, various modifications were made to the BCT. Vroegh Construct designed, procured, manufactured, and integrated this smart lifting point as EPC Contractor into the BCT.
The lifting point is integrated into the existing BCT and designed for a WLL of 105 T according to DNV classification. The lifting point can be remotely connected and disconnected underwater and can rotate at an angle of 45 degrees. A high-quality forging pin was fabricated for this lifting point. The forging is freely suspended in the frame so that the BCT is properly balanced, taking into account the heavy tow bridle at the front and various dynamic accelerations on the tool.
The latching system, with the intelligence to connect and disconnect the tool, is mounted onto the A-frame lifting wire. Using sonar and cameras, the system can be connected underwater to the forged steel pin to then lift the BCT. In addition to the smart lifting point, several other modifications were made. For example, the BCT was narrowed to allow movement between the legs of the A-frame, all excess steel was removed, and a survey buoy was integrated. Also various repairs and wear parts were replaced.
